This aquarium is run strictly on the traditional Berlin Method, widely considered the hardest and least forgiving methodology in modern reef-keeping. It relies heavily on biological balance, high-quality live rock, powerful surface skimming and intense mechanical filtration rather than modern chemical shortcuts.

Current system setup

• Methodology: Pure Berlin Method (no filter socks, no refugium, no dosing pumps)
• Biological filtration: Premium live rock and a deep sand bed
• Mechanical filtration: High-performance protein skimmer
• Purpose: A dedicated "learning tank" to master water chemistry and biological stability

The reality of the hobby

Reef-keeping is a journey of highs and lows. While the goal is a thriving ecosystem, the learning curve can be steep. This tank has taught me a lot about stability, quarantine and the fragile balance of marine life.

Casualties and lessons learned

To keep it completely honest, the journey hasn't been without loss. I recently lost:

• 2x Clownfish
• 1x Watchman Sulphur Goby
• 1x Blenny

This was due to Marine Velvet, something you couldn't spot without being an experienced reef keeper but every loss is a lesson in parameters, behaviour tracking or disease management. Despite these setbacks, the learning tank is still running strong. The biological filter is mature, the water chemistry is stabilising, and I am taking my time before introducing new inhabitants.
