Anthropic's marketplaces

The official, community and demo plugin marketplaces Anthropic publishes, how to add each one, and where to browse what they contain.

Anthropic runs three general-purpose plugin marketplaces for Claude Code. They look similar from the outside, which causes confusion, especially when an old blog post tells you to add a repository that turns out to be the demo catalogue. This page sorts them out.

For the mechanics of installing, see /docs/plugins/install. For errors, see /docs/plugins/troubleshooting.

The three marketplaces side by side

Every marketplace is just a GitHub repository with a .claude-plugin/marketplace.json catalogue. What you type after @ when installing is the marketplace name, which is not always the repository name.

Note the community one: the repository is claude-plugins-community but you install with @claude-community.

The official marketplace is skipped on first run if a managed policy blocks it (see /docs/plugins/org) or if CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_OFFICIAL_MARKETPLACE_AUTOINSTALL is set.

Anthropic also publishes topic-specific marketplaces, for example anthropics/skills and anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins. Add those with /plugin marketplace add <owner>/<repo> like any other.

Watch out for the demo marketplace

Plenty of tutorials say "run /plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-code". That registers claude-code-plugins, the demo marketplace, not the official one.

Most demo plugins also live in the official marketplace under identical names: code-review, feature-dev, commit-commands and security-guidance are all in both. Install them from claude-plugins-official so you do not end up with two copies of the same skill fighting over the same slash command. If you already have both, uninstall the @claude-code-plugins copy.

What is in the official marketplace

The official catalogue is mostly partner content: tool vendors publish plugins that connect Claude Code to their products. Anthropic maintains a smaller set itself, including commit-commands, code-review, feature-dev and the language server plugins. It changes often, so rather than a list that will be stale next week, here is where to look.

Browsing and searching

If the name lookup fails you get Plugin "<name>" not found in any marketplace, which usually means the plugin lives in a marketplace you have not added yet.

The directory is something else

Anthropic's directory is the catalogue on claude.ai, not one of these marketplaces. Plugins you add from the directory on claude.ai reach Claude Code through account sync, described in /docs/plugins/loading. Submitting your own plugin to the directory is covered in /docs/plugins/publish.

Adding the community or demo marketplace

Neither is registered until you add it in a session:

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-community
/plugin install some-plugin@claude-community
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-code
/plugin install some-example@claude-code-plugins

If claude-plugins-official is missing from the Marketplaces tab (common on machines where Claude Code was only ever run headless), add it the same way:

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-plugins-official

Third-party marketplaces

Many popular plugins are not in any Anthropic marketplace at all. Their authors host their own, usually a GitHub repository with .claude-plugin/marketplace.json at the root.

Anthropic does not review these, so read /docs/plugins/security before adding one. Then:

/plugin marketplace add some-author/their-plugins
/plugin install their-tool@their-marketplace-name

The marketplace name comes from the name field in that marketplace.json, and Claude Code prints it after the add succeeds. Other source types (any git host, local paths, hosted JSON) are in /docs/plugins/install.

If you want people to install something you built, start with /docs/plugins/publish or run your own catalogue with /docs/plugins/create-marketplace.
